Premier League - United roar back to stun Blackpool

 - 0

Dimitar Berbatov hit a second half double as Manchester United came from two behind to beat Blackpool 3-2 at Bloomfield Road and go five points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Craig Cathcart headed Blackpool ahead after 15 minutes before DJ Campbell doubled the advantage two minutes before the break as the Seasiders looked to capitalise on a lacklustre first half display by United.

But Berbatov halved the deficit after 72 minutes and Javier Hernandez soon drew United level before Berbatov completed the 16-minute comeback with two minutes remaining.

Manchester United travelled to Bloomfield Road unbeaten in 27 Premier League games and having thrashed Birmingham City 5-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Sir Alex Ferguson made four changes to that side, with Darren Fletcher, John O’Shea, Paul Scholes and Darron Gibson all starting.

Charlie Adam kept his place in Blackpool’s starting line-up despite handing in a transfer request, with Ian Holloway making two changes - Alex Baptiste and Campbell added to the line-up – to the team that lost 2-1 at home to Sunderland.

Blackpool's last league victory over Manchester United came way back in 1963 but the hosts took the lead when Cathcart, signed by Blackpool from United in the summer, delivered a bullet header from Adam’s corner after being left free by Berbatov.

And, with Berbatov and Wayne Rooney isolated, Holloway’s side continued to play the better football, with Edwin Van der Sar producing a smart save to stop captain Nemanja Vidic heading into his own net.

Vidic soon gifted Blackpool another gilt-edged chance, with the Serbian’s poor clearance gifting Luke Varney possession before Elliot Grandin fired over from 12 yards.

That sparked Ferguson into action and the United boss issued Rooney with barrage of instructions, pushing the England striker into a central possession as the visitors reverted to 4-4-2.

Gibson then registered United’s first shot on target , after 34 minutes, shooting straight at Richard Kingson from distance, before Nani fired over from 20 yards with four minutes of the first half remaining.

But there was still time for Blackpool, whose starting line-up cost just £3.5 million to assemble, to double their lead.

David Vaughan’s long-range shot had Van der Sar at full-stretch, forcing a corner, and Adam’s near-post cross was inadvertently flicked on by Nani, allowing Campbell to nod home unmarked.

Ryan Giggs replaced Gibson at half-time but if Ferguson unleashed his trademark hairdryer during the break then it had little immediate effect.

Gary Taylor-Fletcher was allowed to break free on the right flank before driving to the byline and firing in a low cross which Rafael cleared from under his own 'bar.

But with Blackpool tiring quickly, Ferguson’s troops began to find their feet, with Scholes seeing a trademark drive from the edge of the box punched clear by Kingson and Giggs, the driving force behind United's turnaround, shooting wide from Nani’s deep cross.

Rooney’s disappointing night ended after 66 minutes when the striker, who’s only scored three times in the league this season, was replaced by Hernandez.

The Mexican almost had an instant impact, drifting behind the Blackpool defence but shooting straight at Kingson, who did well to make himself big.

But United forced their way back into the game when Nani delivered a neat reverse pass to set Fletcher free, with the Scotsman's cross then side-footed home by Berbatov from close range

Blackpool were dead on their feet and Hernandez capitalised, again beating the offside trap and latching onto Giggs’s lofted through-ball before firing low past Kingson.

Rafael required lengthy treatment and was stretchered off after a clash of heads with Marlon Harewood, eventually leading to 10 minutes of added time.

But the Brazilian would have heard the cheers from the United fans as he was being carried down the tunnel after Scholes released Berbatov down the right channel and the Bulgarian unleashed an unstoppable left-footed shot past Kingson for his 20th goal of the season.

Premier League - Berbatov buries Birmingham

Dimitar Berbatov grabbed his third hat-trick of the season as Manchester United hammered Birmingham 5-0 an embarrassingly one-sided Premier League contest at Old Trafford.

Also starting the move that led to Ryan Giggs’s goal, Berbatov was imperious in all aspects of his game, leading the line with strength and poise and finishing with his head and boot as he carved a poor Birmingham side apart.

Nani added a late fifth in a match that plunged Birmingham back into a relegation dogfight and sent out a title warning to United’s rivals.

It should have been more. Ben Foster was overworked in the Birmingham goal, Nani was wasteful with his shooting and crossing and - when he did get his final ball right - Wayne Rooney missed an absolute sitter as his strange season continues.

Birmingham, for their part, rarely threatened and only looked like scoring when Keith Fahey bettered Rooney’s miss when he kicked air at the far post with the goal at his mercy.

The result keeps United top with games in hand on their rivals. Birmingham hover one point above the drop zone, 16th but with a game in hand on sides below.

A rampant, strutting United dominated from the outset as Berbatov in particular played like football was going out of fashion.

They took the lead within 90 seconds, the first of countless Giggs corners flicked on by John O’Shea and nodded over the line by Berbatov as Birmingham marked zonally but forgot to attack the ball.

Three minutes later Berbatov was denied by the legs of Foster, the former United keeper atoning for a rotten clearance with a smart save from 12 yards.

Birmingham barely touched the ball, with David Bentley the only real threat from wide positions but not helped by a confused Matt Derbyshire, not physically up to leading the line as a lone striker.

United bombarded the Blues goal and thought they had a second when Chris Smalling - in for the injured Rio Ferdinand - headed a corner against the manhood of poor David Murphy, amd Nemanja Vidic rolled the loose ball home, but referee Mike Jones blew for an infringement in the crowded penalty area.

Bentley rattled United briefly with some excellent crosses from the left flank but his team-mates’ movement did not match his delivery and, scare over, the hosts doubled their lead in style just after the half hour.

Rooney charged from halfway, finding Berbatov all too easily and the Bulgarian effortless cut inside Roger Johnson and drilled a low shot past Foster to double his and United’s haul.

It was game over but United were happy to continue their assault. Rooney sent Berbatov through with a cheeky stepover but the ex-Spurs man was unable to add to what is now his record Premier League season haul of 16 when he smacked the ball wide.

They did get a third before the break and it was worth delaying the customary half-time trip to the bar.

After being played a faint hospital ball by Bentley, Murphy’s poor touch allowed Berbatov to hook the ball with a slide-tackle, before exchanging a slick one-two with Rooney. The England striker picked out Giggs at the far post, whose rasping drive into the roof of the net left Foster a spectator.

It was a delightful team goal - Rooney backheeled the ball during the move, while Berbatov’s determination to kick it all off typified his new-found all-action approach this season - and a vital one in that it extended United’s goal difference well beyond Arsenal’s, a statistic that may well be relevant at the end of a tight season.

Birmingham started the second half gamely enough but without asking any questions of Edwin van der Sar. United, meanwhile, should have had an early fourth but Rooney inexplicably headed wide from point-blank range when Nani’s cross put the goal at his mercy.

Bentley went close for Birmingham, drilling just wide after squeezing past Anderson and Fabio da Silva, but United added a fourth when Berbatov rifled in a finish off the bar after superb work by Rooney and Giggs on the left.

Then came Fahey’s miss, as the Irishman somehow failed to convert at the far post after Van der Sar saved Derbyshire’s low drive, sparing Vidic’s blushes as it was his blunder that let the former Blackburn forward in.

In the closing stages Nani, Michael Owen, Berbatov and Rooney all had half-chances, with Nani compensating for his earlier profligacy when he hammered a wicked low drive into the bottom left for a fifth: he spurned several more chances afterwards, but it mattered little with the match well won.

United stay unbeaten in the Premier League after the win, with Birmingham falling to their seventh loss of the campaign.

"Jaringan lewat sentiasa menyukarkan lagi keadaan tetapi jika dilihat bagaimana ia berlaku, ia amat menyakitkan hati seperti ketika berdepan Birmingham," kata perancang England itu.

"Kami amat kecewa dan ia telah berlaku beberapa kali dalam musim ini.

"Tetapi ia telah terjadi dan kami kini perlu memandang ke depan dan melupakannya.

"Kami kena pastikan ia tidak berulang lagi. Kami masih dalam keadaan yang bagus ketika ini.

"Kami masih belum kalah (dalam liga). Kami dalam prestasi terbaik dan juga akan turun pada perlawanan seterusnya dengan momentum yang baru." - AFP
