Champions League - United grab late winner in Valencia

- 0

Substitute Javier Hernandez struck the only goal of the game with five minutes to play as Manchester United beat Valencia 1-0 in the Champions League.

Hernandez also hit the post in a cameo spell which lit up an effective but otherwise uninspiring Manchester United display.

United, missing several key players including Wayne Rooney, were able to name Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick in their line-up, while Sir Alex Ferguson opted for Anderson in the centre of midfield.

The away side seemed to settle well and the in-form Dimitar Berbatov struck a fierce early effort from distance which was close to finding the top corner.

The better chances fell to Valencia, however.

In a frenzied two minute spell Pablo pounced on a moment of indecision from Carrick to flash a shot from range narrowly over the bar, and then Roberto Soldado contrived to miss an open goal when Edwin Van der Sar missed a cross.

Soldado looked on aghast as his header looped over the crossbar.

Anderson nearly got on the end of Nani's cross from the right shortly afterwards, but in truth there was little in the way of clear-cut opportunities to score.

Both sides exercised caution as the game's bright opening ebbed away, and little changed as the second half started.

Berbatov, who had a lonely evening leading the line, fashioned a chance for himself brilliantly from the left wing ,drawing a save from Cesar Sanchez, but it was an isolated moment.

Coach Unai Emery stirred the home fans into song with his decision to bring on Aritz Aduriz on the hour and turn to a more attacking formation.

His introduction seemed to lift the side and Valencia looked the likelier to find the winner as the game entered its final stages.

Full-backs Miguel and Jeremy Mathieu probed on the wings, while Soldado and Aduriz were a handful which forced Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, playing together for the first time this season, to be at their sharpest.

United fans must have thought their best chance of a smash-and-grab victory had disappeared when Nani's cross was met by Hernandez's outstretched boot and steered on to the post after 83 minutes.

But just two minutes later Federico Macheda, on the field himself for less than 60 seconds, slid a pass across to the Mexican who eased past David Navarro before clinically striking the ball into the corner of the goal.

Valencia grew frustrated as the final minutes slipped away, and left the field without anything to show for their efforts.

It will not concern United, though, who will be delighted by the clean sheet and a first win away in Spain for over eight years - a victory that puts them top of the group, level with Rangers.

- Agensi

Rooney dituduh hipokrit

ROONEY menjadi tumpuan media selepas kisah peribadinya termasuk bersama pelacur terbongkar.

- Agensi

Premier League - Owen rescues point for United

Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw by Bolton Wanderers in an exciting Premier League encounter at the Reebok Stadium.

Zat Knight gave the Trotters an early lead before a brilliant solo effort from Nani got United back on terms on 23 minutes. Martin Petrov  then fired the home side back in front midway through the second half with a sweeping counter-attack move that he had initiated, but Michael Owen rescued a point for the Red Devils with his first touch after coming off the bench.

The result means United move up to second in the league, three points behind leaders Chelsea.

United, looking to take full advantage of defeats suffered by both Chelsea and Arsenal on Saturday, started the brighter, but it was Bolton who opened the scoring.

With Rio Ferdinand again left out of the squad as he nears his return from injury, Jonny Evans continued to partner Nemanja Vidic at centre-back. The Ulsterman has been struggling for form of late, and he was again culpable when he couldn't stop Knight steering a sixth-minute corner into the far bottom corner with the outside of his boot for his first goal since February.

An open and entertaining phase of the match saw Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs force goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen into action, while Johan Elmander just failed to meet Kevin Davies's flick-on with an outstretched boot, enabling Edwin van der Sar to parry.

Nani levelled the score midway through the first half when he picked up the ball in his own half and surged forward. The Portuguese ghosted between Knight and Stuart Holden, past Sam Ricketts and drilled a clinical low drive past Jaaskelainen for his second goal of the campaign.

Wayne Rooney had a tame effort from the edge of the box saved and Vidic sent a header wide from a corner just before the break, but the two sides went into half-time on level terms.

Giggs was replaced by Park Ji-sung early in the second half after picking up a hamstring problem, while Rooney came off on the hour mark for Federico Macheda and had his ankle wrapped in ice.

Soon after Rooney's removal Bolton were back in front. Petrov led the break from a United corner, picked out Lee Chung-yong with a fine crossfield ball and continued his run. Lee played the ball in to Elmander with his back to goal, and the Sweden striker found Petrov again. The Bulgarian cut inside and fired in a shot that deflected off Darren Fletcher and beat Van der Sar for his first Bolton goal.

United, Chelsea and Arsenal had not all lost on the same Premier League weekend since March 1995, and Owen made sure that did not change soon after replacing Fletcher on 71 minutes.

Nani bent in a free-kick from deep on the right and Owen glanced a looping header that went in off the far post for his third goal in a week.

Nani turned swiftly past Lee and flashed a strike wide of the far post, while Elmander did the same at the other end after outpacing Vidic, but the game ended with a third successive home draw for Bolton and a third straight away point for United.

'Hari ajaib buat saya'

LONDON - Ketajaman penyudah penyerang Manchester United, Dimitar Berbatov (gambar)ternyata masih lagi berbisa.

- Agensi

Berbatov sedia tawan EPL

Dimitar Berbatov (kanan) melompat mengatasi pemain pertahanan Liverpool, Martin Skrtel dalam saingan Liga Perdana England, kelmarin. Manchester United menang 3-2. – AFP

Dia cuba supaya pemain kami diperintah keluar padang,” kata Ferguson.

– AFP

United must avoid accidents - Evra

Patrice Evra fears Manchester United are going to give themselves a heart attack with their wasteful ways.

Already under fire for throwing away winning positions at Fulham and Everton this season, the Red Devils shot themselves in the foot again at Old Trafford on Sunday when they allowed Liverpool to claw themselves level from two goals down. It took Dimitar Berbatov to rescue them by becoming the first United player to score a hat-trick in the fixture since Stan Pearson in 1946.

"If we keep bringing that nervousness to the situation we could finish the game with a heart attack," said Evra.

"It wasn't that I was worried at 2-2. I was actually very unhappy.

"If we had drawn that game, how could we then say we were going to win the league.

"We had an accident at Fulham. We had another accident at Everton. But if you do it again it is not an accident. It is simply that you do not want to win the league.

"I don't know why we make the job hard when it could be so easy.

"We have to make sure that kind of thing doesn't happen again. We need to make Manchester United solid.

"It is not only about the defenders. It is about everyone.

"We conceded two goals in a match (against Liverpool) where the opposition didn't even have a shot on target (before they scored). That type of thing should not happen."

Premier League - Berbatov brilliance saves United

Highlights: Man Utd 3-2 Liverpool

Dimitar Berbatov's hat-trick gave Manchester United a thrilling 3-2 win against Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The Bulgarian headed the winner six minutes from time, but only after United had contrived to throw away another two-goal lead.

United dominated the first hour and looked supremely comfortable after two Berbatov goals - the first a deft header, the second a magnificent overhead kick.

But some appalling defending allowed Steven Gerrard to score a brace of his own. The Liverpool captain pulled one back from the penalty spot after Jonny Evans clumsily fouled Fernando Torres. And he equalised with a low free-kick that went through a hole in United's wall after John O'Shea tripped Torres at the edge of the box.

United's inability to hold their advantage has already cost them six points. They conceded a late equaliser at Fulham, and last weekend allowed Everton to score twice in stoppage time.

But Berbatov spared his team-mates' blushes, rising high over Jamie Carragher to settle a dramatic contest.

Bulgarian came into the game with four goals in five appearances, and played with the swagger and confidence of a man in top form.

Torres was at fault for the opening goal, concentrating on wrapping his arms around Berbatov as Ryan Giggs's corner came in three minutes before the break.

Berbatov was unable to jump, but did not have to. The ball came to him at chest height and the striker stooped to guide a superb header past Paul Konchesky standing on the near post.

The second, just before the hour mark, was pure inspiration. Berbatov controlled a looping cross with his thigh and, with his back to goal, executed an overhead kick that dipped over Pepe Reina and went in off the underside of the bar. A surefire goal of the season contender.

United were in complete command, but contrived to surrender yet another winning position as yet again their defence's soft underbelly was exposed.

Rio Ferdinand's long-awaited return from a knee injury was put on hold for another week - he missed out on his place in the squad after apparently contracting flu.

The England captain has lost out on the armband at club level to Nemanja Vidic, and the Serbian came into the game having been sent off in three of his last four encounters with Liverpool.

Torres usually gives Vidic a torrid time, but despite continuing to play some way below his best, the Spaniard picked on Vidic's colleagues Evans and O'Shea to win crucial fouls.

He was needlessly upended by Evans on 64 minutes inside the box, allowing Gerrard to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot.

Then six minutes later O'Shea brought Torres down as he raced into the box - Liverpool wanted a red card but Howard Webb settled for yellow. Gerrard inflicted maximum damage with the free-kick, but was helped by Darren Fletcher who broke from the wall, allowing the ball to scoot through low into the right corner of the net.

So soft were the goals, you could hardly call it a comeback - United just handed them to their rivals.

The home side were shell-shocked, and looked devoid of ideas as they attempted to salvage their afternoon.

Nani was predictably unpredictable, and spent most of the second half on the floor. The Portuguese bears extra responsibility following Antonio Valencia's broken ankle, but shows no signs of being able to deliver on a regular basis.

That accusation could be thrown at Berbatov in his first two seasons at Old Trafford, but he emerged yet again to get his team out of jail.

John O'Shea crossed from the right, Berbatov showed strength, power and desire, and headed United to a famous win.

Premier League - Valencia 'back in February'

- 0

Alex Ferguson has revealed Antonio Valencia could be back in action by the end of February.

The Manchester United winger was stretchered off on Tuesday during United's Champions League 0-0 draw with Rangers after suffering an horrific injury following an innocuous incident involving Kirk Broadfoot.

Initially, Ferguson said Valencia would miss the remainder of the campaign, but he said on Friday: "You can never be 100 per cent accurate in these situations and it is a bad injury, but we are looking at the end of February, which is better than we thought on Tuesday."

Valencia had an operation on Wednesday evening to put his left ankle back into place after it was fractured and dislocated.

Ferguson revealed the Ecuador star had also suffered some ligament damage.

"The operation has been successful and the break was clean, which was the major concern for us at the time," he said.

"He is a strong boy, who is very positive about it.

"Being positive helps you in these situations, so we are very hopeful we will get him back then."

Bebe makes United bow

Manchester United's summer signing Bebe played his first game for the club on Thursday night - but it ended in defeat.

The reported £7million signing from Vitoria Guimaraes played the full 90 minutes of the 4-1 reserve-team defeat by Aston Villa.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson opted not to select Bebe for duty with the reserves prior to the international break, pointing out the forward's fitness levels were not up to the standard required.

However, with two weeks' more work and a couple of matches for the Portugal Under-21 side behind him, Bebe faced Villa's second string.

He regularly swapped flanks with Gabriel Obertan and produced some dangerous crosses - although it was Villa winger Barry Bannan who stole the show with a hat-trick. Ciaran Clark got the visitors' other goal, with Nicky Ajose netting for United.

Champions League - Fergie admits Berbatov error

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he made a mistake by not putting Dimitar Berbatov on the bench for Manchester United's disappointing Champions League draw with Rangers at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

Ferguson made 10 changes and gave in-form Berbatov the night off as he tried to assess the standing of some new players. But as United struggled to overcome Rangers' blanket defence, Ferguson found himself lacking someone with the guile to find a way through once Antonio Valencia had departed with his horrific injury.

"We wanted to see how Javier Hernandez would do in a full game," said Ferguson. "Because of that we left Berbatov out and his form has been absolutely fantastic. He has been one of our best players this season and his ability to create in tight situations would have made a difference."

Yet Ferguson insisted he had no alternative as, entering such a congested phase of the season, he needed to know what options he has at his disposal.

"We wanted to find out about one or two players," he said.

"But seven or eight of them played against Chelsea in the Community Shield, so we weren't short of players we needed to win the game.

"There were plenty of good players on the pitch."

Champions League - Rangers frustrate United

- 0

Manchester United and Rangers played out a 0-0 draw in their all-British Champions League meeting after the Scottish champions produced a superb defensive effort to frustrate the home side at Old Trafford.

The game was marred by a horrific injury to Antonio Valencia, who was taken to hospital with a suspected dislocation and a fracture of an ankle midway through the second period.

United made 10 changes to the side that drew 3-3 at Everton in the Premier League on Saturday with only Darren Fletcher retained, but failed to trouble visiting goalkeeper Allan McGregor despite dominating for long periods.

United's main threat came through Irish midfielder Darron Gibson, who was unfortunate with two long-range strikes either side of half-time.

Rangers set up to frustrate and left with a draw courtesy of some superb defending by David Weir and Madjid Bougherra at the heart of their defence.

Valenica top Group C after they demolished Bursaspor 4-0 in Turkey with United and Rangers picking up a point for their exertions.

Walter Smith's side did not manage a single shot on goal during the first half, but they were hardly under pressure against a United team who huffed and puffed without building up any real head of steam before the interval.

A superb ball into the box by Fabio saw Javier Hernandez's header fly inches wide with McGregor scrambling across his goal on 11 minutes, but United would soon be restricted to hammering in shots from distance as Rangers rediscovered the away form that carried them to the UEFA Cup final in 2008.

When United did threaten to cut open the visitors, they usually found a blue shirt or three only too eager to repel them.

Wayne Rooney, restored to the side after being left out at Goodison Park, tried to feed Hernandez on 20 minutes, but the evergreen Weir, at 40 the second oldest outfield player to appear in the Champions League behind the former AC Milan central defender Alessandro Costacurta, got back to snuff his pass out.

There were few moments of real craft in the United play and they will certainly need improvement ahead of the visit of Liverpool on Sunday. Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to make a similar number of changes for that match.

Scotland captain Fletcher set up Gibson on 32 minutes but his raking effort from distance flew low past a post before the lively midfielder volleyed over from Bougherra's header out of the box on 47 minutes.

To add to United's ill fortune, Valencia went down after a fair tackle by Kirk Broadfoot on 57 minutes as players from both sides looked horrified.

The medics were called on and the Ecuadorian required painkilling treatment before being carried off to sympathetic applause from both sets of fans.

Rio Ferdinand had appealed for a penalty after a backheel from close range hit Weir's hand in the first half, but the Glasgow side had their own claim in the second period when Broadfoot was clipped by Chris Smalling on 70 minutes.

Gibson continued the general theme of the night when he thumped a shot over in the final 10 minutes but despite having six added minutes to find a goal, United never looked likely to collect all three points as Rangers left with what they came for.

Premier League - United collapse gifts Everton draw

Everton 3 Man Utd 3

Everton scored twice in stoppage time to claim a thrilling 3-3 draw against Manchester United, who were missing Wayne Rooney at Goodison Park.

United seemed to be cruising to all three points despite the absence of their scandal-hit striker, having come from a goal down to lead 3-1 thanks to strikes from Darren Fletcher, Nemanja Vidic and Dimitar Berbatov.

But injury-time goals by Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta added to Steven Pienaar's opener to give Everton a point in a barely credible finish to a highly entertaining match.

Rooney was left out of the United squad to protect him from expected abuse from Everton supporters in the light of his personal problems which surfaced during the past week.

The move denied the home faithful a chance to heckle their former favourite but even had Rooney started, the boos would soon have been drowned out by cheers as Everton raced out of the blocks and dominated the opening exchanges.

United struggled to get any kind of foothold in the game with Everton, who were playing without a recognised striker, barely affording them a second on the ball.

Arteta landed a sixth-minute free-kick on the top of Edwin van der Sar's crossbar to signal the hosts' intent but before too long United slowly dragged themselves back into the game.

John O'Shea's thunderbolt out of the blue that cannoned off the bar came after United's first sustained period of possession on 15 minutes, although Leighton Baines should have put Everton into the lead on 28 minutes when he made a hash of a close range effort.

The game began to ebb and flow a little more after half an hour of play but it was United who would have opened the scoring had it not been for the excellence of Everton keeper Tim Howard.

The former United man pulled two saves right out of the top drawer to keep his former employers at bay, first getting a boot to repel Paul Scholes's deflected shot and then clawing away Ryan Giggs's effort on 38 minutes.

Everton used the saves as the springboard to go on and take the lead, Pienaar breaking the deadlock after slack United marking allowed Arteta to run through on goal. The Spaniard's initial effort was well saved by Van der Sar, but Leon Osman's composure on the rebound saw him find Pienaar, who had the simple task of slotting into an empty net.

United's response to going behind was devastating. Two goals in the space of five minutes either side of half-time, both created by Nani, stripped the hosts of their advantage and put United into the lead.

The equaliser came on 43 minutes, Nani delivering a pinpoint cross from the right to find the run of Fletcher, who expertly turned the ball past Howard from close range.

Berbatov nearly made it two just before the break with a beautifully timed volley that flew inches wide of the post before the unmarked Vidic did hand United the lead with a downward header from another accurate Nani cross.

Nani was denied his own entry on the scoresheet soon after by another big Howard hand before Berbatov lashed home with a flash of the outside of his left boot after Sylvain Distin was caught out by Paul Scholes's lovely through pass.

Despite efforts that went close by Baines and Osman, United seemed home and dry as the referee's assistant held up the board indicating three minutes of injury time to be played.

But a typical Cahill header gave Everton hope before Arteta brought the house down with a deflected effort from the edge of the area that Van der Sar could do nothing about.

Rooney misses Everton game

Striker Wayne Rooney was conspicuous by his absence as his current Manchester United side prepared to take on former club Everton at Goodison Park.

The England international, who has had to cope with revelations about his private life all week, was not on the team coach when it arrived at the ground an hour and 15 minutes before kick-off and his name did not appear on the team sheet.

Rooney was reportedly at the team's hotel in Manchester on Friday night and there was a suggestion he may have travelled independently but Sir Alex Ferguson's selection dispelled that theory.

Capello puji Rooney

- AFP

United tangguh kontrak Rooney?

Rooney pula masih mempunyai baki kontrak selama 18 bulan lagi.

– Agensi
