Wayne Rooney insists he found it hard to play with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has claimed that he often found it difficult to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo during the Portuguese winger's time at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo departed for Real Madrid in the summer for a record-breaking fee having scored 118 goals for United since he joined the club from Sporting Lisbon as a teenager back in 2003.

The 25-year-old, who scored 42 goals during the 2007-08 season to propel United to a Champions League and Premier League double, often worked in tandem with Rooney to form a deadly attacking duo although the England man insists he found it hard to operate alongside Ronaldo when picked as a front runner.

"It's been different [without Ronaldo this season]," Rooney commented upon receiving the FWA Player of the Year award.

"Ronaldo scored all those goals but when you are a centre forward in the box it's hard to play with. When he does put it [the ball] in, you are not running any more.

"Nani, in the second half of the season, has been brilliant. Plus Antonio [Valencia] has come in and done really well."

Rooney has been utilised as the focal point of the United attack this season, often to devastating effect, and the former Everton star, who scored 26 Premier League goals this term, revealed that boss Sir Alex Ferguson had told him that he needed to score more headed goals.

"The manager said to me before the season that I needed to score more headers," he added.

"But I was playing out wide a lot back then. I said: 'Do you want me to get on the end of my own crosses?'

"We'd lost Tevez and Ronaldo; those two had scored a big chunk of our goals and I knew I had to step up. The manager said he wanted me in the box more and that I had drifted wide a bit too much. I had to try to control my energy, stay in the box, so when the chances came I had the energy to take them."
