Premier League - United win to keep hope alive



Portuguese winger Nani again provided a telling contribution. A week after his deft chip gave United victory at Tottenham, he finished sweetly with the outside of his boot to prevent Chelsea becoming champions with a week to spare.

Their hopes of a fourth successive title remain slim, since Chelsea only need to beat Wigan at Stamford Bridge. Should Carlo Ancelotti's men slip up, United must beat Stoke at Old Trafford to deny them.

It should have been a more comfortable victory than the scoreline suggested, but it scarely mattered since Chelsea's goal difference is vastly superior.

However, missed chances from Dimitar Berbatov, Nani and Michael Carrick ensured a nervy finish for Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

Rio Ferdinand was restricted to a late substitute cameo, but Wayne Rooney returned to the starting line-up following his groin injury.

Dimitar Berbatov, Nani, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes also featured in an adventurous team selection by Alex Ferguson, and the champions made a strong start.

Berbatov crossed from the right for Rooney, who killed the ball brilliantly and struck a powerful shot that Craig Gordon had to be at his agile best to repel. Giggs seized on the rebound but saw his shot blocked.

Knowing their four-year reign as champions is likely to end next weekend, the travelling United fans were determined to enjoy themselves - sounding a retro note with songs hailing Eric Cantona, Andy Cole and even Nicky Butt.

An open game provided chances for both teams, as John Mensah headed wide from a corner and Lorik Cana glanced another header inches wide. Steed Malbranque also tested Edwin van der Sar with a long shot, but it was United who made the breakthrough just before the half-hour mark.

The visitors had enjoyed plenty of possession in enemy territory and it paid off when one-touch interplay between Rooney, Berbatov and Darren Fletcher allowed Nani to lash a low shot into the far corner from the right side of the box.

United dominated but remained capable of the odd aberration, not least when Nemanja Vidic clapped sarcastically in Steve Bennett's face after the referee awarded a Sunderland corner, earning himself a completely unnecessary booking.

The visitors should have extended their lead early in the second half, but were let down by profligate finishing.

First Nani had a chance to double his tally when played through the right channel, but attempted to dink the ball over Gordon instead of going for power and the Scottish keeper made a sharp save.

Then Berbatov somehow put the ball over when he met a Rooney cross just two yards out - although the Bulgarian was stretching, it was a bad miss.

Then, two minutes later, another Rooney cross gave Berbatov a header four yards from goal but it looped over off a defender.

The game ought to have been over, but it remained on a knife edge and there were palpitations when Sunderland full-back Phil Bardsley went down in the box - but Bennett showed the former United man a yellow card for diving.

Carrick might also have put the result beyond doubt when he was teed up by Nani with Gordon out of position, but Michael Turner cleared his shot off the line.

However, Sunderland offered little threat of an equaliser, and the match ended with Owen Hargreaves making his first appearance since September 2008, although his participation was limited to less than a minute of second-half stoppage time.

United's reign as champions has another week to run, and they showed they will not surrender their crown without a fight.
