Premier League - Anderson ankle not broken

Manchester United have received an injury boost after scans revealed midfielder Anderson did not break his left ankle on Tuesday.

The Brazilian was stretchered off after damaging his left ankle during the game against Derby at Old Trafford, and it was feared he had suffered a fracture that would have kept him out for several months.

Instead, manager Alex Ferguson has said he could return by the middle of February.

"We sent Anderson for a scan and there's no break," said Ferguson. "But there was some ligament damage. We think he'll be out for three weeks."

United are still counting the cost of several injuries sustained during the Carling Cup semi-final, which saw them book a place against Tottenham Hotspur in the final at Wembley.

"Nani suffered a groin injury and he'll be out for a week. Jonny Evans (ankle) will be out for three weeks," said Ferguson.

The pair are added to an already lengthy injury list and United will have to field a makeshift back four against Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

"The ones who are out are Rio Ferdinand, Anderson, Nani, Rafael, Patrice Evra, Wayne Rooney, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans and Ji-Sung Park," he said.

"We still have Dimitar Berbatov, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo fit. But we will have to call on some young players.

"I could play Darren Fletcher at right back, with Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic and John O'Shea, which would give me an experienced back four. But I've called in Richard Eckersley and Fabio (da Silva), who could be involved."

Ferguson also said that Ferdinand and Brown are close to returning, and could face Everton on Monday February 2, although a Cup replay for either side would see the game moved to the previous Saturday.

"Rio and Wes could be back for the Everton game, if the match is on Monday," he said.

"It's not the best position to be in. January is a difficult month. We've talked a lot about having a winter break to get rid of the strains you pick up in January. But it's not to be. The result is that the strains become injuries and the players miss games."
