FA Cup - Berbatov guides United past Spurs

Dimitar Berbatov scored against his former club as Manchester United reached the FA Cup fifth round with a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

The visitors went ahead at Old Trafford through an early goal by Roman Pavlyuchenko, but two goals in 60 seconds by Paul Scholes and Berbatov (pictured) gave United a laboured win that saw little resistance from Tottenham.

While it was low on entertainment by Sir Alex Ferguson's side's high standards, the Premier League leaders seemed to have enough in the tank as they effectively controlled the match.

Spurs took a surprise fifth-minute lead when Pavlyuchenko stooped and sent a perfectly-weighted flicked header past Ben Foster in the United goal after good work on the left from Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Tom Huddlestone.

It almost seemed as if the hosts - who started a touch sluggishly - had elected to give Spurs a head start, but from that point on they dominated.

Berbatov latched on to a long pass and drilled a shot just wide, Carlos Tevez sent a crashing drive off the crossbar, Daniel Welbeck was denied a superb solo goal by Vedran Corluka's block and Tevez again sent a drive on target but Ben Alnwick tipped it behind for a corner.

Eventually United levelled and they needed some of the luck they had previously lacked.

Michael Carrick sent a low corner from the right to the edge of the box, where Scholes let rip with a drive that probably would have gone straight into the arms of Alnwick were it not for the intervention of Huddlestone, who deflected the ball between Tevez's legs and in.

The Reds doubled their lead seconds later when they won the ball back from the kick off and Carrick launched a high, hopeful ball towards the Spurs box.

Berbatov killed it with a great touch and put a sweet low finish past Alnwick, although the quality of the strike should not excuse some abject defending by Spurs to let their ex-team-mate man drift between the two centre-backs.

United controlled the rest of the half and went in 2-1 up having enjoyed the lion's share of possession.

Harry Redknapp made a half-time change, bringing on Giovani dos Santos for the anonymous Luka Modric, and they started the second half with some intent.

Gareth Bale volleyed a David Bentley centre just wide, while England's former Blackburn and Arsenal winger himself sent a half-volley flashing just wide.

But that was pretty much it for the Londoners as United decided to claim the ball as their own for the remainder of the match, despite not creating a chance of note.

Giovani fired over from a good position with six minutes remaining and Spurs had a late shout for a penalty waved away by Peter Walton when Scholes was accused of handling Adel Taarabt's shot.

New United signing Zoran Tosic came off the bench to make his first-team debut in England but therwise it was a dreary second half that fizzled out to a win for United and a sixth defeat in nine games for Spurs.
