Sir Alex backs Berba to prove worth

Sir Alex Ferguson is confident £30.75million striker Dimitar Berbatov will eventually prove what a class act he is at Manchester United.Ferguson eventually splashed out a club-record fee on Berbatov after some hard bargaining by Tottenham on transfer deadline day.

Yet, despite flashes of obvious brilliance, consistency has so far eluded the 27-year-old during his stay at Old Trafford.

Indeed, some cruel pundits have likened Berbatov to another player of immense talent, Juan Sebastian Veron, who joined United for a vast sum accompanied by a major fanfare from Inter Milan, but failed to do himself justice and was offloaded to Chelsea as the Red Devils struggled to emulate past glories.

Berbatov's critics do not believe he works hard enough and, in splitting the axis built up by Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez last term, has cost United a strikeforce good enough to conquer Europe.

Ferguson feels that judgement is extremely harsh.

And he is convinced Berbatov will eventually prove to be money well spent.

"Dimitar is a great player," said the United boss. "We are still getting used to using him properly.

"You can see the quality. He is fantastic. There are very few players who can produce moments like he does in games. It can decide them."

Most Spurs fans would agree, although that will not prevent them giving Berbatov a hard time should he win his fight against an Achilles injury picked up against Sunderland last weekend and be fit for Saturday's match at White Hart Lane.

Given United's status as one of the most reviled clubs in England, Ferguson has grown accustomed to abuse being directed towards his players and expects Berbatov to suffer on Saturday evening.

"He is going to get the reception we expect," said the Red Devils chief.

"It is part of modern-day society and is never going to change.

"Berbatov knows he is going to get a lot of abuse from the fans."

Ferguson believes part of the problem is Tottenham fans never quite getting over the loss of Michael Carrick to United two years before.

But he does not really feel they have any cause for complaint given they received almost £50million in transfer fees and got the use of Fraizer Campbell for a year as well.

"If it had been anyone apart from United it would not have caused as much of a furore," said Ferguson. "They still regret selling Carrick to us, which is the biggest problem. But they wanted to sell him to us, so I can't see how they blame us for that.

"They got a good deal on that last day as well, getting Fraizer Campbell in the bargain. They really milked it well."
