Premier League - United held at Tottenham

Manchester United head to the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan six points behind Liverpool in the Premier League after drawing 0-0 with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

The defending champions remain third in the table, while Tottenham climb one place further away from relegation as the move above Manchester City into 14th.

The two most influential players on the pitch were goalkeepers Edwin van der Sar and Heurelho Gomes, who both made a string of fine saves to keep the match goalless.

Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in particular had a subdued performance by his standards, though he did have a goal disallowed in the second half after he controlled the ball with his hand from a corner before he rifled a shot into the top corner.

For all their troubles, the result continues Tottenham's admirable unbeaten league run against 'top four' opposition, following draws with Arsenal and Chelsea and the 2-1 win over Liverpool already this season.

Former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov was passed fit to play against his old club, and although he received regular boos from the home crowd every time he touched the ball, the reception was not as hostile as could have been expected for the man who scored 47 goals in his two years at the club before demanding a move to Old Trafford.

United - without the suspended duo of Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra - began the match playing like the home side, barely relinquishing possession in the opening minutes.

However, it was Spurs who created the best chances of a first-half that was at times surprisingly pedestrian.

Ten minutes in, David Bentley almost scored a goal almost identical to his strike in the 4-4 draw at Arsenal, as he flicked the ball up with his right foot and struck a looping, 30-yard volley with his left. On this occasion, however, Van der Sar was equal to it.

Just a minute later Spurs - already without captain Ledley King, who was ruled out in the morning - lost Jonathan Woodgate after the centre-back suffered a recurrence of a back injury which could rule him out of UEFA Cup action on Thursday. Midfielder Tom Huddlestone came on to replace him, with Didier Zokora moving back into defence.

Van der Sar then made another save from Aaron Lennon before United had several long-range efforts go wide and saw other shots blocked, most notably from Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher.

The home crowd then saw their side unfortunate not to take the lead with two chances in as many minutes in the closing stages of the first half.

First, Zokora's cross was met with a diving header from Luka Modric - who had completely eluded Rio Ferdinand - but the acrobatic effort was wide with Van der Sar rooted to the spot, before Huddlestone's thunderous long-range strike hit Roman Pavlyuchenko in the chest on its way to goal.

Just as Tottenham had the better chances in the first half, United emerged from the break as the more potent side, and it was Gomes's turn to pull off some stunning saves.

In the final 10 minutes, the much-maligned Brazilian first deflected a curling strike from former PSV Eindhoven team-mate Park Ji-sung, before tipping substitute Ryan Giggs's free-kick which was bound for the top corner around the upright in the final minute of normal time.

Van der Sar was also called into action after the break when he punched away a dangerously dipping Bentley free-kick.
