Vidic loves playing with Rooney

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has revealed his love of playing alongside Wayne Rooney - no matter where Sir Alex Ferguson plays him.With seven goals in five matches for club and country, Rooney is clearly a man West Brom must watch when they take on the champions at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

Once again, Rooney is facing the prospect of being moved around slightly, with Ferguson confirming he would not be scared to play the 22-year-old in a wide position as he did last season.

Vidic detects the former Everton star would prefer to operate behind a main striker, as he has done to such great effect for England this week.

But wherever Ferguson wants to use him, Vidic is delighted to have Rooney in the same side.

"You always want someone like Wayne in your team," he said.

"It does not really matter what position. He always works hard so hard. Whether it is as a striker or left winger, he is always moving, either defending or attacking.

"Maybe he enjoys being a forward more but that is the boss' decision.

"He always tries to put Wayne in the position where we need him and now he has started scoring again, he will have the confidence he needs to get even more."

A goal or two from Rooney could come in handy as United look to pick up the winning formula they established before the international break.

Four wins on the trot in three competitions ensured no further ground was lost after an intensely difficult start to the campaign.

Now, just as they did 12 months ago, United must kick on again to ensure they exert maximum pressure on early pace-setters Chelsea and Liverpool.

"We need to go on another winning run as we did last year," said Vidic.

"We need to win six or seven games, or maybe even more than that.

"Last year we did not start great and we have done it again.

"We have had a tough schedule and Liverpool and Chelsea have started very well, so we need to improve.

"But we are very positive. We have a good squad and I hope we are going to keep winning."

Ferguson has guaranteed Ryan Giggs a place in his starting line-up as the Welshman has been on his own training at Carrington for the last fortnight.

Midfield trio Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes are all out, so Anderson's return from World Cup duty with Brazil on Friday afternoon was not ideal, meaning Darren Fletcher or John O'Shea could be needed in central midfield.
