Tugas besar menanti Ronaldo tahun 2008

United mahu kukuh cengkaman liga

Kepulangan Ji-Sung suntik semangat United

Terus kekal bersama United sehingga Jun 2009

KAPTEN Belanda, Edwin van der Sar menamatkan segala spekulasi mengenai masa depannya di Old Trafford apabila menandatangani kontrak baru selama setahun bersama Manchester United, semalam.

Fergie To Rest Stars Against Roma

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed his intention to field an almost entirely different team in Rome this week compared to the one used to defeat Derby 2-0 at Old Trafford.

With their place at the top of Group F already secure and Roma guaranteed to finish runners-up, the Manchester United boss sees no reason to risk his key men at the Stadio Olimpico, especially with a blockbuster confrontation with Liverpool looming at Anfield next weekend.

Midfielder Owen Hargreaves is virtually certain to be among those excused the flight to Italy after suffering a minor calf problem in the warm-up against Derby.

Ryan Giggs and Edwin van der Sar are almost sure to stay at home as well, with only Hargreaves' late replacement Michael Carrick and central midfield partner Anderson set to retain their starting spots.

China international Dong Fangzhou is among a number of youngsters likely to get a game, with Ferguson keen to take the opportunity to blood some of his fringe men, who have been denied first-team experience by United's unexpected Carling Cup exit at the hands of Coventry.

"It is a golden opportunity for us and we are not going to miss it," said Ferguson.

"Roma have qualified, so they will probably play some younger players and so will we.

"I will take a lot of the first-team squad with me because I need 18 players but it will be an almost completely different team."

Giggs Deserves More Credit - Rio

Ryan Giggs added the milestone of 100 league goals to his 736 appearances, nine Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League triumph with Manchester United, yet Rio Ferdinand still believes the veteran winger is one of the most under-rated players in the game.

Giggs has been strutting his stuff for the Red Devils for an incredible 16 seasons now and despite hitting the grand old age of 34, has already pocketed a contract which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2009.

It is now virtually impossible to imagine he will not eclipse Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time appearance record of 759, possibly as early as this season if the Welshman stays fit.

However, Ferdinand is convinced Giggs will not truly be appreciated until his playing days are over.

"Some people don't get 100 appearances let alone 100 goals," said Ferdinand.

"It is phenomenal and no surprise for a player of his calibre.

"I just don't think Ryan really gets the credit he deserves for what he has achieved in the game, not only in terms of winning medals but the quality of his play on the left wing year in, year out.

"It is a shame we don't really appreciate a footballer who has been the most successful of our generation.

"It seems he is respected a lot more abroad than he is here, where he rarely gets mentioned. Maybe he will be appreciated more when he retires."

Although many of Giggs' previous 99 efforts were better than Saturday's 40th-minute tap-in, few would have been greeted with more relief.

Prior to the Cardiff-born star's strike, Sir Alex Ferguson's side had laboured in their attempts to overcome a Derby outfit seemingly destined for the drop.

Although Giggs did not quite break the dam, Carlos Tevez added another not long afterwards, then scored the best goal of a game spoiled by a saturated pitch after an hour.

Tevez's double took his tally for an increasingly impressive debut campaign to eight and the South American might well have had a hat-trick if Cristiano Ronaldo had been more sympathetic to his pleas to take a late penalty.

Ronaldo, who is still waiting for his first United hat-trick, dismissed Tevez's attempt to grab the ball, which seemed a somewhat peevish response, although one which was backed wholeheartedly by Ferdinand.

"Sentiment does not come into it," said the England defender.

"If the game had been 1-1, Ronaldo would have taken the penalty so he should take it anyway.

"It is nothing personal towards Carlos, I am sure he did fancy it but we might have a big penalty later in the season, so Cristiano was right."

Ferdinand is among a large group of first-team players likely to be rested from duty on Wednesday when United conclude their Champions League Group F campaign in Italy against Roma.

With a trip to Liverpool looming next weekend, Ferguson will not want his key men risked as the Red Devils look to record a win at Anfield that will significantly strengthen their title claims.

"We have got into this position in the Champions League where the manager can make a few changes but I am sure he will pick a team that can win, no matter what," said Ferdinand.

"Hopefully we get a good result there and then build up to a massive game at Liverpool on Sunday."

Derby boss Paul Jewell faces a rather more troubled week as he continues his attempt to piece together a side capable of keeping the Rams' heads above water until the transfer window opens in January.

Steven Howard did give the visiting supporters something to cheer by bundling home Derby's first away goal of the campaign but Jewell accepts the current picture is not particularly bright.

"I have learned lots and I am continuing to learn," he reflected.

"It is a tough job but it is a fantastic job and I am looking forward to finishing it. I just wish I could have been here at the start of the season because at the moment it is tough times for Derby."

United dispose of Derby

Manchester United defeated Derby County 4-1 with a brace from Carlos Tevez, Ryan Giggs's 100th Premier League goal and a controversial Cristiano Ronaldo penalty in injury time. Substitute Steven Howard scored a consolation with the score at 3-0.

Giggs scored an uncharacteristic tap-in to open the scoring late in the first half before Tevez struck a second on the stroke of the half.

Tevez cracked in a third with an hour played but Derby put together some decent football after that and were rewarded with Howard's bundled consolation following good work by Tyrone Mears.

Ronaldo, who went down easily under a challenge from Mears in the second minute of time added on, put away the penalty kick.

Derby arrived at Old Trafford with the intention of battling United for every ball from an organised tactical set-up. For almost the entire first 45 minutes it worked a treat.

Giggs went close with a free-kick while Anderson and Owen Hargreaves matched the industry of Paul Jewell's midfield. However United seemed a touch complacent in the early stages.

On 24 minutes Giggs found Ronaldo on the left and the Portuguese slid the ball in for Wayne Rooney, but the England man was denied a simple tap-in by James McEveley's last-ditch challenge.

The late blocks prevented many a shot reaching Stephen Bywater's goal and although County were combative, only Claude Davis found his name in referee Chris Foy's book due to a shoulder charge on Rooney.

Their hard work was undone in the 40th and 45th minutes to send the home side in at half-time two goals to the good. Firstly Ronaldo's left-foot shot was parried by Bywater and Giggs arrived to tuck it away close in.

On the stroke of the half Tevez was found by Anderson. The Argentinian missed the ball on his attempt then fired the second into the far corner.

The Red Devils re-emerged after the break to a downpour yet looked comfortable as they stroked the ball about. Giggs was unfortunate not to add his 101st league goal when he volleyed a Rio Ferdinand cross from the corner of the six-yard box against the base of the far post.

Seconds later Kenny Miller almost found himself through on goal at the other end but in the end opted to shoot from 20 yards instead of beating last man Wes Brown and his effort was a yard over the crossbar.

In the following minute United had a third. Tevez received the ball inside the penalty area from Brown and turned; he bought himself half-a-yard of space outside Dean Leacock and smashed the ball across goal and into the bottom corner.

Title race enters crucial phase says Ferguson

MANCHESTER (Reuters) - The Premier League title battle is entering a critical phase, Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson said on Friday.

Ferguson's champions are four points behind leaders Arsenal before Saturday's home game against bottom club Derby County, with six league games between now and the start of 2008.

"December, as we know, is a crucial month," Ferguson told a news conference. "By the end of December, I think we will know for certain who is going to be challenging for this league.

"There may be some points dropped here and there but the important thing is to be at the top or round about the top on January 1 and therefore look to the second part of the season as a real progressive step to try and get the title."

United's schedule involves a trip to Anfield on December 16 to face a Liverpool side who Ferguson believes could be in a four-way fight for the trophy.

"For a couple of weeks we thought that Chelsea and Liverpool were maybe going to get caught short, but they have recovered terrifically and they are playing really well.

"They are up there challenging and there is not really a lot between the teams now so I think you can expect a very competitive top of the league clash now. I think the two will be involved."

PRODUCTIVE RUN

Like Ferguson, United winger Cristiano Ronaldo is eyeing top spot but said United have plenty of time to try and catch Arsenal.

"If we don't pass Arsenal in the next few weeks, don't worry," Ronaldo said.

"If we keep going with this football, with this team I think we have a good chance, be it Christmas or February."

With 11 goals in his last nine games Ronaldo has taken his tally for the season to 13 and Ferguson believes the Portugal international has every chance of overhauling last season's total of 23.

"That was the question mark at the start of the season and I said 'why shouldn't he?'. He's still a young player, he's still improving and he's still developing," Ferguson said.

Ronaldo, 22, also believes there is more to come on the back of his most productive goal-scoring run, which includes five goals in his last three league games.

"I try to improve every year and this year I think I am in a good way. I am working hard in training and in games and everything has gone forward. This is good for me and I want to score many goals," Ronaldo said.

ROONEY BETTER THAN KAKA - MARADONA

Diego Maradona does not believe Kaka is the best player in the world after he picked up the Ballon d'Or.

Indeed the Argentine legend says that Manchester Unietd and England star Wayne Rooney has more to offer than the Brazilian - who was crowned World Footballer of the Year at the weekend.

"I don't know too well how the election is done but I think that Rooney is better than Kaka," Maradona explained in El Grafico.

"Milan is a team that depends all the time on Kaka but that doesn't make him the best player in the world."

Maradona also looked ahead to the Fifa Club World Cup which kicks-off in Japan later this month and where his beloved Boca Juniors are favourites, along with Milan, to meet in the final.

"In my opinion Boca has chances to win the Fifa Club Championship. Everyone is talking about Milan, but if Kaka doesn't play well they will be in problems because they depend too much on him," he said.

"I am not scared of Milan, I only want Boca to get to the competition in good physical condition."

Speaking of his current favourites in football - Maradona ruled on who he feels is the pick of his fellow countrymen.

"At the moment the best three Argentinian players are Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Juan Roman Riquelme."

GIGGS BACKS RONALDO'S INTEGRITY

Ryan Giggs has backed Sir Alex Ferguson's claim that Cristiano Ronaldo is still paying for his reputation as a diver.

Ronaldo attracted plenty of criticism during the early days of his Manchester United career by going to ground far too easily under minimal contact.

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate still felt it necessary to brand the Portugal winger 'a cheat' during one stormy meeting with the Red Devils at the Riverside last term when Ronaldo won his side a controversial penalty by falling over Mark Schwarzer.

Ferguson is convinced such rows were going through the mind of referee Rob Styles on Monday when he booked Ronaldo for diving in the Fulham box at Old Trafford despite TV replays showing Antti Niemi getting nowhere near the ball as he slid out to confront the Portugal star.

And Giggs, while recognising Ronaldo's blinding speed makes it difficult for a referee to make a split second decision, also believes that was the case.

"I think he is paying for his reputation," said the veteran Welshman.

"He did have a reputation (for diving) when he first came over here but that has gone now.

"It is hard for the referee. Everything happens quickly, Ronny is running so fast and he has to make a split second decision.

"Maybe he didn't give it because there was no contact. But Ronny was trying to avoid the goalkeeper and the keeper's arms followed his legs. In my view that is not simulation.

"Everyone thinks it is a penalty and if the referee looks back on it he will maybe feel he has made a mistake."

It is not the first time Styles has found himself at the centre of a penalty storm.

At Anfield earlier this season, he awarded Chelsea one of the softest spot-kicks imaginable when Florent Malouda fell down after jumping between Jamie Carragher and Steve Finnan.

Styles rang Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez to apologise afterwards, although it did not stop him briefly getting dropped from the Premier League list.

Referees' supremo Keith Hackett must now decide whether to take similar action.

However, Ronaldo has shown an admirable reluctance to condemn Styles too excessively despite the obvious slur on his character.

"Getting the yellow card is frustrating but football is like that sometimes," he said.

"The referees make mistakes, as do the players sometimes. He made his decision, I am not of the same opinion."

Effectively, Styles' ruling meant Ronaldo scored twice for the 11th time as a United player but is yet to complete that elusive hat-trick.

With his tally for the season now at 13, it is little wonder Ferguson believes the 22-year-old is a certainty to better last term's incredible 23-goal return and why in all the major global football awards, Ronaldo is listed as the second best player on the planet, trailing only AC Milan's Kaka.

Indeed, should United win the Champions League this term, or Portugal land Euro 2008, Ronaldo should assume the mantel of best player on the planet.

Even Giggs, the most decorated Red Devil of all time and a man with nine Premier League titles behind him, can scarcely believe how talented the Madeira-born player actually is.

"Cristiano is on fire at the moment," said Giggs.

"He is strong in the air, his volleying technique is fantastic and he is virtually scoring all the goals."

Certainly with Ronaldo at his current level, it is difficult to see United not being involved in the Premier League title shake-up next May even though they still trail leaders Arsenal by three points, a gap that will widen to six if the Gunners win their match in hand at Newcastle tomorrow.

With basement boys Derby due at Old Trafford on Saturday, United should maintain winning form heading into 'Blockbuster Sunday' on December 16 when they travel to Liverpool and Chelsea entertain Arsenal.

Those battles should provide a few pointers as to the eventual destination of the championship and with the packed Christmas programme to follow, a key stage in the battle for honours is looming.

"We have said all season the league is going to be tight," said Giggs.

"There are some strong teams and the top four is starting to take shape now.

"It is always important to get good results over Christmas, so hopefully, we will get the right results and be somewhere near the top.

"We are not too bothered about being top at the turn of the year but as long as we are there or thereabouts we will be happy."
