Giggs: United will get better

Ryan Giggs is confident Manchester United will be an even stronger force next season after their FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea.Not even the knowledge they are Premiership champions once more can ease the raw hurt of Saturday's defeat.

The Red Devils' capital base was a subdued place as they contemplated a double that got away thanks to Didier Drogba's late extra-time strike.

Yet, unlike their loss to Arsenal at the Millennium Stadium two years ago which capped a season when United won nothing, Giggs accepts the emptiness of defeat will soon give way to the fulfilment of United achieving their number-one target this term.

And, with Sir Alex Ferguson poised to add at least another three players to his squad, Giggs - who was frustrated in his attempts to become only the fourth man to win five FA Cups - is confident the Old Trafford outfit can enjoy even more success next time around.

"Each season, you look to move forward," said the Wales skipper.

"This defeat does not hurt any less because we are champions, but maybe in a couple of days' time we will be able to take a step back and look upon this season as being a successful one.

"Our main aim was to win the Premiership and we achieved that. Now we need to kick on a try to improve.

"There is a lot to look forward to because the younger players are getting better and I am sure there will be a couple of new signings as well."

The first of those fresh faces is set to be confirmed as early as this week, with Owen Hargreaves thought to be on the brink of completing a £17million move from Bayern Munich. Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer admitted as much when he revealed that Hargreaves "will go" and that it was the "wish of the player".

Sir Alex Ferguson has made no secret of his desire to bring Hargreaves to Old Trafford and with the 26-year-old due to report for England B duty in Manchester this week, the chance to tie up an anticipated four-year contract before the United manager heads off on his summer break seems almost too good to miss.

Ferguson's immediate scouting programme includes a trip to Amsterdam to watch Ajax's free-scoring forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, who has long been viewed in Holland as a star of the future.

Huntelaar is on a list of potential striking reinforcements that is also believed to include Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Fernando Torres.

How far Ferguson is prepared to go to land any of the quartet remains to be seen but he does need to bolster his attacking options at some point.

The impact of Louis Saha's on-going injury problems was evident again at Wembley as a tired United, for all Wayne Rooney's admirable industry and Alan Smith's aggression after his introduction as a late substitute, lacked bite where it mattered.

Although Didier Drogba was just as subdued as Cristiano Ronaldo, the Ivory Coast man remained alert enough to snaffle the one chance which came his way, exploiting a momentary lapse from the otherwise foot-perfect Rio Ferdinand.

Drogba's goal left United to lament referee Steve Bennett's failure to spot Petr Cech had carried the ball across the line as Giggs slid in to toe-poke Rooney's low cross goalwards when the game was still deadlocked.

In truth, it should have been a free-kick to Chelsea given Giggs effectively bundled Cech into his own net.

However, as the officials ruled there was no foul, Giggs felt United had genuine grounds for complaint.

"I knew straightaway the ball had crossed the line," said the 33-year-old.

"In those situations, you often look for a player's reaction and it looked like Cech felt he had got away with it because
